Citytv serves up tasty CreComm PR blogs for breakfast

There's nothing better than waking up in the morning, turning on the TV, and seeing the PR class that you would be teaching if it wasn't a day off.

But I was trying to forget on Remembrance Day. Guffaw!

This morning, Citytv served up Red River College CreComm/PR blogs on Breakfast Television - Citytv viewers: check out my blog roll on the right side of this page to read them for yourself.

So far, "reviews are mixed." Ha, ha! Love that Chase getting media coverage by NOT having an opinion, which is - of course - an opinion. Genius!

A big thanks to CreComm grad Megan Batchelor for coming in to interview us for her report. As always, it's great to get student work shown on TV - a shout out to the great-lookin' folks in class three and their blogs!

A few observations:

1. That glowing celestial orb in the report is my head. I'm going to start going with powder instead of polish.

2. I'm not crazy about the intro, the journalism construction that allows the anchor to say, "Bloggers feel..." one way and "others feel..." another way. Who are these "others?" I challenge the others to a duel after school!

3. Also in the intro: the idea that bloggers spread unfounded and/or anonymous rumors. Unlike the traditional media? Or grannies talking to each other on the phone, for that matter?

4. I wouldn't so much say that our blogs are for "networking" - that's really a Facebook thing. Our blogs are to give every writer his or her God-given right to have a media outlet, to find out how it works with - or against - traditional media, and to simply practice writing.

I, and Stephen King, believe that a great writer is someone who writes for 30 minutes a day because he or she needs to do it. The Internet allows us to not only do that, but to do it in front of a worldwide audience. Whatta concept!

5. It's true that these are journalism students in the report, but they're also PR, media production, radio, TV, creative writing, and advertising students.

It's mastering all of these things and learning how they work together that will make our students valuable to employers and productive citizens now and when they graduate.

To isolate blogging to one thing is to deny it the power and richness of the medium, especially when combined with Facebook, Twitter, Skype, YouTube, Flickr, a million other websites, a smartphone, grit, gumption, and determination.

No offense to BT, but whenever I see a traditional news story about something Internet related, this is all I can think of:

I like to watch this clip every six months, and it just gets funnier and funnier.

I love how sex and right wing politics was listed below recipes of things people look-up on internet.

I don't just own a tie, I own you, Shorr. Haw, haw.

Shorr: Let's build a website which caters to all three. Something about naughty Republican foodies.

Also, I think we should have coffee and hang out on Kenton's blog more often.

I actually caught this at 6:15 am as I was taking care of my flu-ridden 5-month-old. I have to say that while it was nice to see Cre Comm featured on TV, the story itself didn't do much for me. I agree about the lead-in, it's likely that Brian Yasui wrote that without having ever written or read a blog himself. I also wanted to hear more about the blogger "community." You know, how we all read each others posts and comment on them, etc... there was no mention of that at all.

I don't think anyone reads blogs as a substitute for news anymore, we read them for commentary on the news. This story missed that point, too.

You're right, I mean "Holllly" Kenton doesn't ever wear ties, right?

Kenton... SHHHHH!... If the media ever finds out I'm using my "non opinion having opinion" as a way to get my opinion out there my plan for total world domination will auto fail!

Kenton Larsen said...

Ha, ha! You guys rule!

I own many ties. And I wear them whenever Dave Shorr isn't around, right? Right!

Dave Shorr said...

Well, if there's one thing I've come to know about you Kenton is that you've never made an attempt to impress me, so I'm not surprised.

When you're around, I can't be the most interesting person in the room - so why even try?

They had some good b-reel of you Kenton.

And good stuff from Chase. He said the things I want to say, but with words and sentences.
